Liver Transplant

Also known as hepatic transplant, hepatic transplant is conducted in patients suffering from acute liver failure or end-stage liver disease. Thousands of liver transplant procedures are carried out around the world each year, with the help of both deceased or live donor.

Liver plays an important role in the human body as it helps prevent infection and removes toxins from the food you eat. It also produces bile, which is a chemical that helps absorb cholesterol, fats and vitamins.

Thus, liver transplant is inevitable in patients whose liver has stopped functioning properly or has been damaged because of some reason. In most of the liver transplant cases, a part of liver is retrieved from the body of a liver donor for transplantation.

This is because of two reasons. First, there are not enough number of deceased donors. Second, human body is able to regenerate the lost part of the liver automatically.

During the liver transplant surgery, the diseased liver is partially or completely removed and transplanted with a part or entire liver retrieved from a live or a diseases donor. Some of the liver transplant risks include blood clot, infection, bleeding, seizures and rejection or failure of the organ. The anti-rejection medications administered after the procedure may lead to hypertension, headache, diabetes, diarrhoea and thinning of bones.
