Kidney Transplant

Kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs that help filter out impurities and other waste material from the blood. By filtering out fluid, minerals and excess waste from the blood, it helps produce urine, which is finally excreted out of the body.

When kidneys stop functioning properly due to certain disorders, toxic waste and impurities start to accumulate in the body. If the problem continues, the patient is at an increased risk of suffering from end-stage renal disease, kidney failure and extremely high blood pressure.

Such patients are either put of dialysis or recommended to undergo renal transplant. During the kidney transplant procedure, a surgery is conducted to remove the non-functional or poorly functioning kidney from the body of the patient. It is replaced with a donated kidney, retrieved from the body of a deceased or a living donor.

There are certain kidney transplant risks and complications that the patient may suffer from following the procedure. Infection, bleeding, blood clots, organ rejection and stroke are some of the complications of kidney transplantation.

The patients are usually administered an anti-rejection medicine after the procedure to prevent the body from rejecting the foreign organ. This medication can, however, lead to weight gain, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and acne.
