Heart Transplant

Heart transplant is usually the lost option for cardiac patients whose condition has not improved despite taking years of medication and undergoing other heart surgeries. Cardiac transplant is conducted in patients suffering from heart failure or damage that has resulted over a period of time or suddenly because of a trauma.

During heart transplant surgery, the diseased or damaged heart is partially or completely removed and replaced with a donor heart. The donor heart is either retrieved from a living or a deceased donor. It is a complex, sensitive, major and a lengthy surgery, which gives positive outcome only when proper care after heart transplant if followed.

Heart transplant is usually conducted in people suffering from weakening of the heart muscles, several coronary heart disease, amyloidosis, congenital heart defect, defect in heart valves or abnormal heart rhythms. This procedure is sometimes accompanied with the transplant of some other organ as well, such as kidney, liver or lung.

Bleeding, infection, stroke, heart attack and blood clots are some of the heart transplant surgery complications. Some of the other heart transplant risks include problems replaced to the coronary arteries, rejection of the organ by the body of the patient and side effects of anti-rejection medicines.
