Bone Marrow Transplant

A bone marrow transplant, also known as stem cell transplant, is conducted to replace the damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood stem cells. This is a highly specialized procedure used for the treatment of a number of disorders, including certain cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, in addition to multiple sclerosis, aplastic anemia and thalassemia.

Stem cell transplant is typically conducted in patients whose bone marrow has stopped functioning properly. Bone marrow plays a vital role in the human body as it helps with the production of all types of blood cells. As a bone marrow is damaged, the human body is deprived of enough number of healthy blood cells.

The bone marrow used for transplant can be derived from patient’s own body (autologous bone marrow transplant) or retrieved from the body of the donor (allogenic bone marrow transplant).

Recovery after bone marrow transplant may take some time. There are chances that the patient may suffer from certain bone marrow transplant risks, such as cataract, infertility, organ failure or graft failure or rejection. However, the chances of such bone marrow transplant complications are rare.
