Vitrectomy + Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is an emergency condition that can potentially lead to permanent loss of vision if not treated immediately. It results when the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye called retina gets detached from the tissues surrounding it.

Retinal detachment causes the tissue to detach from the blood vessels that nourishes it. As a result, the patient suddenly starts to see lots of floaters, flashes of light or dark shadow in the vision field because of detached retina.

This condition is often treated through surgical intervention, which also involves Vitrectomy. During this surgical procedure, the fluid in the eye called vitreous humor is completely drained out of the eye. This allows the eye surgeon to have complete and clear access of the back of the eye and hence treat Retinal detachment with the help of cryopexy, laser or silicone band.

Vitrectomy is also conducted before the treatment of other issues related to the eye, such as hole in the retina, macular pucker or vitreous hemorrhage. At the end of the surgery, the doctor presses the retina against the eye wall with the help of a gas or an oil bubble.
