Phacoemulsification with IOL Implantation

Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a tried and tested method to treat cataract and to reduce the pressure of fluid inside the eye. The pressure inside the eye may increase because of conditions such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

The vision of the cataract patients becomes clouded because the internal lens starts to become opaque. As the lens focuses light on retina for a clear vision, the patients suffering from cataract are unable to see clearly. Thus, the vision becomes cloudier, as cataract advances with time.

Photoemulsification is a type of a small incision surgery for cataract, in which the internal lens of the eye is first emulsified with the help of an ultrasonic device. The emulsification is then aspirated and replaced with a balanced salt solution.

Photoemulsification is typically followed by IOL implantation, which results in dramatic improvement in vision where the patient is able to see clearly again. This small incision surgery for cataract has shorter recovery period and involves less pain than other procedures.
