Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition resulting due to high fluid pressure inside the eye, with a tendency to damage the optic nerve. Glaucoma treatment is warranted for people who start to experience its symptoms such as sudden eye pain, loss of side vision, halos, haziness, redness and narrowed vision.

Before prescribing treatment for glaucoma, the eye doctor first conducts a series of painless tests to confirm diagnosis. Depending on the level of damage caused by the glaucoma eye on the optic nerve and side vision, the doctor may prescribe the use of eye drops or to undertake a glaucoma surgery.

There is no glaucoma cure as such, but doctors can conduct a laser surgery or a microsurgery to either increase the flow of fluid that builds up in the eye or to drain the excess fluid to ease the pressure inside the eye.

Glaucoma cannot be prevented and most people develop this condition only at a later stage, despite the fact that they are genetically predisposed to it. However, with the help of timely diagnosis and effective treatment, glaucoma can be effectively controlled to reduce the symptoms.
