Stomach cancer

The growth of cancer cells inside the inner lining of the stomach is known as stomach cancer. Cancer can be detected at an early stage of any of the symptoms of stomach cancer show up in the patient.

There are several causes of stomach cancer, including inflammation in the gut called gastritis, growth of polyps and long-lasting anemia.

Stomach cancer treatment depends upon the type and stage of stomach cancer. While a patient suffering from stage I cancer is treatable, treatment of a patient suffering from stage IV cancer is dangerous and risky. A combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy helps treat stomach cancer successfully.

Recurrence of stomach cancer is possible, which means that the cancer can come back though it has been fully treated. Treatment of recurrent cancer is the same as treatment of stage IV stomach cancer. However, the treatment depends upon the general health of the person and the location of cancer recurrence.

Surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and radiation therapy are the different stomach cancer treatment options. Each treatment has its own benefits and cons against the side effects and risks associated with the stomach cancer. The doctors involved in stomach cancer treatment include a medical oncologist, gastroenterologist, surgical oncologist and radiation oncologist.
