Prostate cancer treatment

When malignant cells develop in the tissues of a man’s prostate gland, the condition is known as prostate cancer. The symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination and weak flow of urine. Several examination tests are done to diagnose this cancer, including digital rectal exam, PSA test and biopsy.

Cancer develops in the prostate gland present in the male reproductive system, which is just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate is shaped like a walnut that surrounds the urethra. The prostate gland is responsible for making fluid which is part of the semen.

For prostate cancer treatment, it is necessary to conduct a physical examination of the patient, learn about any history of such genetic condition, and also perform a digital rectal exam. Other tests include transrectal magnetic resonance imaging and biopsy.

There are several factors that impact the selection of prostate cancer treatment options, which include the patient’s age, the stage of the cancer and whether there is a recurrence of cancer. Treatment option chosen depend upon past treatment of prostate cancer, health problems of the patient and expected side effects as well.

The chances of recovery from prostate cancer depend upon the stage of cancer, level of PSA, grade of tumour and whether the cancer has spread outside.
