Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is the cancer of the ovary, the primary organ in the female reproductive system responsible for the production of eggs for fertilization. This type of cancer is characterized by an abnormal growth of cells in the ovary.

The possibility of ovarian cancer is higher in women who have ovulated more than normal in their lifetime. This happens in women who never had children or women who start ovulating at a younger age or reach menopause later than usual.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, pain in the side, abdominopelvic pain, back pain, diarrhea, fatigue, appetite, heartburn, nausea, irregular menstruation, frequent urination and bleeding during sex.

Having children helps suppress ovulation. Thus, ovarian cancer is higher in patients who often ovulate, use fertility medication and those with a family history of ovarian cancer and heredity nonpolyposis colon cancer.

Ovarian cancer diagnosis is done by physical examination, blood test, rectovaginal examination and biopsies. Ovarian cancer treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and hormone therapy. Ovarian cancer is treated well when it is diagnosed at an early stage. If the disease does not spread outside the ovary, then this disease can be treated effectively.
