Colorectal cancer treatment

Colorectal cancer is also known as colon cancer or bowel cancer. It refers to the growth of abnormal cells in the colon or rectum, resulting in cancer. The different signs of rectal cancer include blood in stool, tiredness all the time, weight loss and an abnormal change in bowel movement.

Rectal cancer treatment includes a combination of radiation therapy, surgery, targeted therapy and chemotherapy. When the abnormal cells have not spread outside the walls of the colon, it can be cured by surgery or therapy, but when the abnormal cells grow beyond the walls of the colon, the situation becomes deadly.

Bowel cancer is a part of colon cancer, which is diagnosed by taking a sample of the colon through colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. This is eventually followed by medical imaging. Screening is also quite effective in decreasing or preventing death from colorectal cancer. During the colonoscopy procedure, there are small polyps that may be found and removed. If the polyps are larger, then a biopsy of the polyps is required to assess if the polyp is cancerous. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin help reduce the extent of cancer.
