BMT - Multiple Myeloma Autologous

Autologous stem cell transplant for multiple myeloma is used to reduce the number of myeloma cells found in the patient’s body. Stem cell transplant can be both allogeneic and autologous.

Autologous stem cell transplant involves the patient’s own stem cells that are removed from the peripheral blood and bone marrow of the patient, stored, frozen and later reinfused in the body of the patient at the time of transplant.

After the transplant is carried out for the treatment of multiple myeloma, there is no permanent guarantee of treatment since myeloma can return yet again.

Multiple myeloma bone marrow transplant cannot cure the condition completely, but the diseases can be kept in check for a few years. As a result, the overall life span of the patient is increased. Patients with multiple myeloma bone marrow transplants are usually advised two autologous transplants, which are conducted six to twelve months apart. However, the procedure is riskier and involves more side effects.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplant, is yet again a part of multiple myeloma bone marrow transplant, which uses another person’s blood-forming stem cells that are re-infused into the body of the patient. It should be known that allogeneic transplants are more riskier than autologous transplants, but are better fighters against cancerous cells.
