Trans-sphenoid operations
Pituitary tumour surgery is the best way to eliminate pituitary tumours. Also known as transsphenoidal surgery, it is done with the use of sphenoid sinus so as to create a hollow space in the skull just behind the nasal passages, which is just below the brain.
This type of surgery has many advantages, which include no touching of the brain during surgery and lesser chances of causing damage to the brain. Besides, there is no visible scar involved. If the surgery is performed by a skilled neurosurgeon, then the cure rate is much higher. However, this is in the case of microadenoma.
On the contrary, if the tumour grows larger and has grown in the nearby structures such as brain tissue, nerves and tissues covering the brain, then the chances of getting cured is much lower. Also, the chances of damaging the nearby blood vessels, nerves and brain tissues are much higher.
During the procedure, the surgeon inserts instruments through the normal passage in the nose, thus opening the sphenoid sinus to get access to the pituitary gland.
