Laminectomy
Laminectomy is performed for the removal of lamina for creating space. This is known as decompression surgery, which enlarges the spinal canal to provide relieve from pressure from the nerves or spinal cords.
Laminectomy surgery is performed for the treatment of spinal stenosis. Under this procedure, the damaged disks and bones are removed. Numbness and pain in the leg are some of the symptoms warranting the need for the procedure.
Removal of spongy tissue between discs helps treat lumbar spinal stenosis. The procedure helps relieve pressure from the nerve roots. These nerve roots cause pain with aging.
Post laminectomy surgery, the patients are forbidden from performing physical activities until the third week of the surgery. However, post spinal fusion surgery, patients are asked to keep away from physical activities till eight to twelve weeks.
After six weeks of the surgery, patients can progress to their basic exercise program. Some of these physical exercises include back strengthening activities and abdominal activities.
