Discectomy
Discectomy is described as the surgical removal of herniated disc that presses on the spinal cord or the nerve root. During the procedure, the central part of the intervertebral disc, which is called the nucleus pulposus, creates pain by stressing the radiating nerves or spinal cord.
Surgical removal of herniated disc procedure is carried out with the help of a microscope. It is called microdiscectomy, a procedure that uses a microscope to view the nerves and discs. Removal of an injured disc offers relief to the patient from severe pain.
Microdiscectomy is regarded as a minimally invasive procedure that helps in disc removal by removing a portion of the herniated nucleus pulpolsus by the use of surgical instrument or loupe for magnification.
Since 1971, several other advanced options have been introduced in the market to achieve the same benefits. The idea was to produce effective alternatives to the traditional procedure of discectomy.
