Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

‘Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy’ is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove the gallbladder. Rather than a five to seven inch incision, the laparoscopic cholecystectomy operation requires only a few small openings in the abdomen. Gallbladder removal is usually opted in the case of gallstones that are usually small and hard.

The lap cholecystectomy procedure will need four small incisions of up to half an inch. Ports are placed through these incisions with the camera and the instruments which allow access to the inside of the patient. The lap camera transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a monitor which will become a surgeon’s eye during the lap cholecystectomy procedure. Instruments inserted through the other ports will allow the surgeon to delicately separate the gallbladder from its attachments to the liver.

Patients will probably be able to get back to normal activities within a week of the procedure. However, total lap cholecystectomy recovery will take about two to four weeks.

Lap cholecystectomy complications are infrequent, but bleeding, infection, pneumonia, blood clots, leakage of bile into the abdomen or heart problems may occur in some cases.
