Gastrojejunostomy- Laparoscopic

Laparoscopic gastrojejunostomy is an advanced surgical procedure during which the laser technique is used to create a connection between the stomach and the nearest loop of the jejunum.

Gastrojejunostomy is usually undertaken to achieve two main purposes – to drain the contents of the stomach and to provide a bypass route for material in the gastric pouch. Traditionally, the procedure was done using an open gastrojejunostomy approach, but nowadays laparoscopic gastrojejunostomy has evolved to become the most preferable approach.

Gastric Outlet Obstruction (GOO) is the most common Gastrojejunostomy Indication. It is also performed for chronic duodenal or prepyloric ulcer. Gastrojejunostomy is used as a procedure for relieving the obstruction along with truncal vagotomy to decrease acid production. Billroth II reconstruction can be an alternative.

During the gastrojejunostomy laparoscopic procedure, a laparoscope is inserted through an incision. Some surgical instruments will be placed in the other small cuts and used to connect the jejunum to the stomach. After the procedure is completed, the cuts are closed with sutures or staples.

There are some major and minor gastrojejunostomy laparoscopic complications. Complications such as fever, infections or delayed gastric emptying are moderately severe, but not life-threatening. However, major postoperative complications such as bleeding, wound breakdown and peritonitis are more severe.
