Peripheral Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a common and minimally invasive surgical procedure, which is conducted with the help of a tube that is inserted through the artery and is eventually guided to the spot where there is an obstruction and blockage.

Peripheral angioplasty is commonly performed for cardiovascular catheterization. The process is conducted under local anesthesia to make sure that the patient is at ease during the procedure.

During peripheral angioplasty procedure, an intravenous line is created into the arm. Then, a catheter is inserted through the blood vessels channeled through the upper thigh. With the assistance of high-resolution X-ray video, a catheter is passed through the peripheral artery which is treated in the process.

Thus, after enlarging the peripheral artery with a balloon, it is deflated and withdrawn. The artery stays open and clear. Sometimes, a peripheral stent is placed to keep the artery open to conduct peripheral artery disease treatment.

Peripheral angioplasty recovery time is about 6 to 8 weeks. After stenting in leg arteries, your leg may be swollen which will take time to improve completely. Once the blood flow to the limb is normal, you can return to your daily routine.
