Cyber Knife

John R. Adler, a professor of the Standford University invented CyberKnife system, a non-invasive treatment for malignant tumors, benign tumors and other medical conditions. CyberKnife radiation delivery system, also known as Robotic CyberKnife Radiosurgery System, is used to treat cancerous and non-cancerous tumors in lung, liver, prostrate, kidney, spine, brain and pancreas.

Since its first inception in 1990, CyberKnife has involved several generations of varying systems. It should be noted that the two main features of the CyberKnife system are Image Guidance and Robotic Mounting and they are different from other types of stereotactic therapy methods.

Under Image Guidance system, the procedure uses computer equipped image guidance that helps surgeons to target tumors inside the body of the patient with stereotactic radiation. Precision robotics involves a lightweight radiation device which is mounted on the robot’s arm that is used to administer radiation.

Compared to conventional radiation, CyberKnife treatment with stereotactic body radiotherapy helps to kill cancer faster and more effectively with less radiation. The system works with high precision and accuracy and helps directly target the tumor by adjusting to where the radiation needs to be given to kill cancer cells.
