Chemoembolization

Chemoembolization is an effective liver cancer treatment procedure. It may either be used as a standalone treatment and also in combination with chemotherapy, radiofrequency ablation or surgery. Sometimes, chemo embolization is used to treat other types of carcinoma cancer as well, especially in cases when it has spread to other parts of the body.

Chemoembolization procedure entails placement of synthetic materials into the blood vessels that particularly feed and nourish the cancerous tumors. The purpose of the procedure is to cut off the blood supply to the tumor and also trap chemotherapy within it.

Chemoembolization surgical procedure involves injecting local anesthesia into the part of the skin where the incision is made. Intravenous sedative may either make patient sleepy, which depends upon how deeply the patient is sedated. Chemoembolization side effects may include nausea, fever, pain and vomiting.

Conventional transarterial chemoembolization cost range between $2,220and $5,650. The procedure is, however, not recommended for individuals suffering from kidney dysfunction, severe liver dysfunction and blockage of bile ducts.
