Vaginal Hysterectomy

Vaginal hysterectomy refers to the process of removal of the uterus through vagina. This is a simpler and a quick procedure as compared to abdominal hysterectomy, in which the uterus is removed by making a single, large incision in the abdomen.

Vaginal hysterectomy surgery is conducted only when the size of the uterus is normal. The hysterectomy procedure may be conducted through the abdomen in case the uterus is enlarged. During vaginal hysterectomy, a device called hysteroscope is used to look inside the uterus and detach it from the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes and the surrounding supportive tissues.

In case the surgeon decides to or needs to remove the cervix along with the uterus during vaginal hysterectomy, then the procedure is known as total hysterectomy. If required, the surgeon may even decide to remove one or both the ovaries and the fallopian tubes during the procedure.

Hysterectomy recovery time may depend on how well the patient is able to recover after the procedure. Women may experience certain hysterectomy side effects after the procedure, including nausea and heavy bleeding. Infection, damage to nearby organs and blood clots may occur rarely.
