Microwave Endometrial Ablation

This is a gynaecological procedure used to treat patients who suffer abnormal and excessive vaginal bleeding. During microwave endometrial ablation, microwave radiation is used to destruct the innermost layer of the uterus called endometrium.

This procedure is only performed in women who are past their childbearing age or who do not wish to conceive in the future. Even after the treatment, some women may experience regrowth of the tissue in the uterus. This requires further treatment in the future to correct any associated problems such as pelvic pain and excessive bleeding.

Before the procedure, the surgeon carefully excludes the possibility of any other reason that may cause excessive bleeding such as the presence of polyps, fibroids and cancerous cells. This is done with the help of hysteroscopy. In case of the absence of these conditions, the patient is given hormonal therapy so as to shrink the thickness of the endometrium.

Finally, the endometrium is ablated with the help of microwave radiation, delivered through an instrument passed through cervix. Endometrial ablation recovery depends on several factors, including how well the patient responds to the treatment and the severity of the condition.

Endometrial ablation cost depends on whether the procedure is conducted at doctor’s office of in a hospital setting. Usually, the cost of endometrial ablation is higher in case of a hospital setting, which include the cost of anesthesia.
