Thyroidectomy

The surgical procedure for thyroid removal is known as thyroidectomy. During the thyroid surgery, the entire gland is removed from the body of the patient. When a patient is suffering from thyroid cancer or any kind of conditions affecting the thyroid gland, then thyroidectomy is conducted.

Symptoms of thyroid include tremor and nervousness, bloatedness, menstrual changes, mental fogginess, racing heartbeat, cold, heat intolerance and high cholesterol levels. While these conditions are treated with prescribed medicines, but symptoms of thyroid cancer should be consulted with a doctor.

The symptoms of thyroid cancer include feeling of a lump in front of the Adam’s Apple in the neck, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing, swollen glands in neck, pain in throat, hoarseness and persistent cough.

Complete thyroid removal is performed to eliminate the thyroid gland fully, to stop the thyroid gland from producing high level of thyroid hormone. On the other hand, subtotal surgical treatment for thyroid surgery cuts a major portion of the thyroid gland, but a small portion in the situ to preserve thyroid function.
