Tracheostomy
Tracheostomy is performed with the help of a long tube, which is inserted into the windpipe to enable ventilation or opening of the airway duct for proper breathing. This may be performed in case of the blocked airway that may hinder easy breathing.
Tracheostomies are also called stomas that refer to the hole in the neck through which the tube is inserted. Tracheostomy can be a permanent or temporary medical procedure. During tracheostomy procedure, a cut is made in the neck, just below the vocal chords. With the help of the tracheostomy surgery, air is passed to the lungs and breathing becomes easier by bypassing air through throat, nose and mouth.
Conditions that require tracheostomy are infections in the airway, birth defection in the airways, chronic lung diseases, facial burns, cancer in the neck, mouth or neck injuries, tumours, obstructive foreign body in the airway, and others.
In case of temporary tracheostomy, a scar is left after the tube is removed. In case of permanent tracheostomy, doctors will advice you on maintaining and clearing the tube on a regular basis to avoid any obstruction in the airway.
