Mastoidectomy with Tympanoplasty
Together, the terms Mastoidectomy and Tympanoplasty are referred to as surgical procedures conducted to treat and control chronic infection in patients’ ears to restore hearing ability. Patients often develop diseased air cells in the mastoid bone that block their hearing abilities. Mastoidectomy surgery helps remove those diseased cells sitting in the honeycombed cavity situated on either side of the base of the skull.
Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure performed in combination with mastoidectomy to help graft the tympanic membrane. This is done by using a prosthetic device, which is implanted to help replace ossicles that are damaged by infection.
Mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty indications are high fever above 101 degree centigrade, foul smelling from the ear, leg swelling, persistent vomiting, swelling around the incision and persistent drainage from the ears.
