Laryngectomy
The removal of the larynx or your voice box is necessary if you have cancerous cells in it, have sustained severe neck injury or have developed radiation necrosis (damage to the larynx from radiation therapy). The voice box is an important organ that houses vocal chords and it helps produce sound. Laryngectomy procedure is conducted to remove the larynx completely or partially, depending on the extent of damage to the voice box.
Before laryngectomy surgery, a series of tests are performed to ensure that the patient is ready for the surgery. Surgery preparation measures include a thorough physical exam, routine blood check up, smoking cessation counseling, stopping medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin just before the surgery and fasting after midnight before the surgery day.
As part of laryngectomy recovery process, make sure that the stoma opening is clear off viruses and bacteria. You may use a cotton swab soaked in hydrogen peroxide to clean the edges of the stoma and gently removing excess mucus and crusting. This will ensure more airflow to the lungs.
