Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Unlike other traditional procedures, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is implemented as a modern approach towards treating sinuses without removing the lining tissues. With the development of high-definition cameras and endoscopic processes, it is now much easier to control the fine lining of tissues during surgery, rather than destroying the lining tissues. It is now a proven fact that the very thin lining tissues are useful for keeping sinuses healthy.

FESS indications include nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis, recurrent acute sinusitis and allergic rhinosinusitis. The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, but it can be conducted under intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia as well. The major focused area is the ostiomeatal unit, where a small amount of bone is eliminated to facilitate drainage and ventilation.

An overnight stay is required post-surgery, but the patient is discharged in the next morning. In case of certain concerns such as nose bleeding and vomiting, the patient may have to stay longer as per doctor’s advice.
