TAPVC stands for Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection which is relatively less common and is a congenital defect in infants that represents approximately 2% of all congenital heart abnormalities. TAPVC encompasses a group of anomalies that sees the pulmonary veins connect directly to the systematic veins, which connect directly to the systematic venous circulation via persistent splanchnic connections. The TAPVC Surgery is done to establish unobstructed communication between the pulmonary veins and the left atrium. This interrupts the connections with the systemic venous circulation and removes any involved intracardiac shunting. This improves the outcome for this challenging patient group.
