Coarctoplasty

A Coarctoplasty along with the insertion of a stent is often an effective strategy to treat cases of recoarctation following a previously done surgery. This is used primarily to treat coarctation of the aorta which is a form of congenital heart disease. It accounts for between 5-8% of all congenital heart diseases and may be associated with additional cardiac abnormalities including bicuspid aortic valve, ventricular septic defect (VSD), patent ductus arteriosus, and other more complex cardiac deformations.

Coarctation Of Aorta Surgery is done by attempting to open the narrowed arteries that take blood from the veins to the aorta. Oxygen-rich blood cannot get to the heart quickly as it needs to if the arteries are narrowed. Varying degrees of being narrowed exist. Tests like chest x-rays, ECGs, and echocardiograms can help determine how bad the narrowing is. Catheterization or surgical repair to fix the issue depends on the child’s condition.

A Balloon Coarctoplasty is the small tool inserted on the end of a catheter as it goes into the vein. The catheter then goes through to the aorta to be blown up, which helps widen the narrowed artery. This procedure helps get oxygen-rich blood to the heart without allowing it to be obstructed by narrowed passageways.
