ASD Closure / Repair (Adult)

Atrial Septic Defect is a birth defect where a baby is born with a hole in the wall between the heart’s upper chambers called the right and left atria respectively. This is one condition in a line of Congenital Heart Defects where most cases are not discovered till symptoms present themselves. Most patients are older by the time the symptoms appear, which can happen as late as a person’s 30s. In rare cases, sometimes the patient is even older. People experience symptoms like shortness of breath, heart palpations, fatigue, and body swelling. The patient usually goes to the emergency room or to a medical clinic with their symptoms. It’s not till tests are done that a condition they have had all those years is even discovered.

Smaller ASD’s may close on their own. Larger holes generally require a form of ASD Treatment called Hole In Heart Surgery to repair the ASD before it causes more problems for the patient in the future. Congenital Heart Disease like ASD is fairly common in the US with over 200,000 cases diagnosed each year. ASD requires a medical diagnosis and lab testing/imaging to prove the conditions’ existence. Atrial Septal Defect Repair is done through a surgery that is generally minimally invasive. It often requires the doctor to perform a catheterization lab on the patient. Very large ASDs in more rare occasions may require open-heart surgery. A device is generally inserted by a catheter put into a vein in the arm or leg and that travels to the heart.
