Transplant Surgery in India

Transplant surgery in India is successfully performed in various hospitals. Transplant surgery cost in India is low compared to other countries, hence, India is a preferred destination.

Transplant surgery involves surgically replacing a failed organ with a healthy one obtained from a donor. This surgery is only done for conditions or diseases that have progressed despite other treatment methods and have led to organ failure. It is usually reserved for patients with end-stage diseases.

Transplant surgery - Eligibility

Whether to perform transplant surgery is decided depending on the patients:

  • Diagnosis
  • Stage of the disease
  • General physical condition
  • Age

Patients with the following are not suitable for transplant surgery:

  • Lung, liver or kidney problems
  • Poor leg circulation
  • Cancer
  • Chronic infections

The organ transplantation process is a long and tedious one, which involves various tests, evaluations, and indefinite waiting. Once the transplant team members approve that the patient is a suitable organ recipient, he/she will be added to the national transplantation network to look for a donor. After finding a suitable donor, the transplantation surgery is carried out.

Transplant surgery - The Procedure

Before the transplant surgery, the organ is harvested from the donor. Organ harvesting refers to removing cells, tissues, or organs from the donor and preserving them till transplantation. If the donor is deceased, the organs will be transplanted within a few hours of harvesting. If the donor is alive, the recipient’s transplant surgery is performed immediately after the donor’s surgery.

Once the recipient receives the news of the available organ, he/she should not eat or drink anything. The recipient will be called to the hospital. A complete physical check-up and other tests are performed to evaluate the recipient’s fitness for surgery and to detect any infection or other medical problem. Following this, the recipient will be prepared for surgery.

General anesthesia is administered to the recipient, and a central venous catheter will be placed. A breathing tube that is attached to a mechanical ventilator is placed in the recipient’s throat.

The surgeon will carefully remove the diseased organ and replace it with the healthy donor organ. The recipient’s blood vessels are connected to the donated organ. The surgeon will check the blood flow to the organ and then close the incisions.

The precise steps of the transplant surgery will vary according to the type of organ transplant surgery performed. These include heart transplant, liver transplant, lung transplant, bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, etc.
