Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in India

India is becoming a hotspot for various medical procedures, including reconstructive surgeries. These surgeries involve repairing and reshaping the body structures damaged or affected by trauma, injuries, developmental abnormalities, congenital disabilities, medical conditions, including tumours. The reconstructive surgeries aim to restore the function of the organ or the part of the body affected, as well as improve the appearance.

Eligibility criteria for Reconstructive surgeries

Whether a patient is eligible for reconstructive surgery or not is decided by a plastic surgeon, who thoroughly evaluated the patient's case, their medical history, the medical necessity, and other factors. Reconstructive surgery is recommended for patients who have either congenital or acquired conditions.

Congenital conditions (present at birth) include:

  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Vascular anomalies, such as birthmarks
  • Ear defects such as prominent or constricted ears and microtia (small external ear, not properly formed)
  • Hypospadias (opening of the urethra is on the underside or below the penis)
  • Craniofacial conditions
  • Facial and cranial deformations, such as craniosynostosis
  • Hand deformities, too few or too many digits

Acquired conditions (occur or develop after birth) include:

  • Cancer of the head, neck, skin, breast, and others
  • Trauma and injuries
  • Remove dead tissue following severe infections
  • Burns
  • Conditions that affect hands, such as paralysis, arthritis, nerve compression, Dupuytren’s Contracture, and ganglions.

Reconstructive surgery procedure

The procedure of a reconstructive surgery varied according to the goal of the surgery, type of the technique used, and the part of the body.

The following are the main techniques use in reconstructive surgeries:

Skin grafts

In this technique, a damage or missing part of the skin (the recipient site) is covered with a healthy patch of skin taken from another region of the body (the donor site).

The three types of skin grafts are:

  • Split thickness skin graft – the topmost layer (epidermis), as well as a part of the deeper layer (dermis) of the skin, is used.
  • Full-thickness skin graft – the entire dermis, along with the epidermis, is used.
  • Composite graft – all layers of skin, fat, and occasionally the underlying cartilage is used.

Tissue expansion

This technique involves stretching the tissue surrounding the damaged part of the skin, thereby allowing it to grow extra skin. In this procedure, a balloon-like device (known as an expander) is inserted below the skin and is slowly filled with saltwater, making the skin to stretch.

Flap surgery

In this procedure, a living piece of tissue with the blood vessel is transferred from one part of the body to another. This technique can be used to restore the structure and function of the areas that have damaged lost skin, fat, muscle, and/or skeletal support.

The three major types of flap are:

  • Local flap - a piece of skin and underlying tissue near the wound is used.
  • Regional flap – a part of the tissue attached by a particular blood vessel is used.
  • Microsurgery or free flap surgery - the flap is disconnected from the donor site and is reconnected to the recipient site.
