When a person suffers meniscus tear in the knee, doctors usually suggest meniscectomy surgery. During the meniscectomy surgical procedure, surgeons remove torn meniscus to help it heal with time. However, a doctor’s decision to operate depends upon the ability of the meniscus of the patient to heal quickly, which in turn depends on the health, age and activity level of the patient.
Sometimes, doctors decide at the time of surgery by looking at the meniscus, whether to remove it or not. Their decision depends upon specific factors such as how strong is the meniscus and how severe and big is the meniscus tear.
A small tear appearing on the outer edge of the meniscus is treated with home treatment. However, medium or severe tear are best treated with a surgery. When the tear spreads from the outer edge to the inner portions of around two-thirds of the meniscus, the situation is complicated and cannot be solved with surgery. When there is a tear within the inner two-third portion of the meniscus, then it is treated with partial surgery or meniscectomy.
