Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgeries are procedures that help to lose weight by making modifications to the digestive system. Some operations reduce the size of the stomach, thereby reducing the amount of food intake and making you feel full. Other procedures alter the part of the digestive system (small intestine) that absorbs nutrients and calories.

Bariatric surgery is recommended only when you haven’t been able to lose weight with lifestyle changes and medicines, or serious conditions like type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea, making it difficult to lose weight. The types of bariatric surgery include – gastric bypass (most common type), biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, and intragastric balloon, and other laparoscopic procedures.

Bariatric surgeries can aid in improving several medical conditions related to obesity. However, these surgeries require permanent healthy changes to the lifestyle, such as switching to a healthy diet and exercising regularly to maintain the benefits of the surgery for the long-term.
