Gallbladder surgery is also known as cholecystectomy. It is typically conducted to remove the gallbladder completely in case it is diseased or filled with gall stones.
The presence of gall stones may cause gallbladder pain, which can be extremely difficult to bear. Typically when the gallbladder is filled with many gallstones, the complete gallbladder removal is carried out by making an incision in the abdomen of the patient.
Gallbladder stone treatment can be conducted through an open surgery or with the help of a laparoscope. The later is the minimally invasive form of surgery that results in minimal pain, scarring and helps in quick recovery. While the later involves the creation of several small incisions that heal quickly, the former is the traditional approach that involves the creation of a single, large incision to remove the gallbladder.
During the gall bladder surgery, the surgeon mostly inflates the abdomen with carbon dioxide or air so that the gall bladder can be seen clearly. Gall bladder plays the role of storing the bile, which is a digestive juice supplied to the intestine as and when required. In patients with no gall bladder, the juice is produced and directly supplied to the intestine instead of being stored.
