Vaser Liposuction

Fitting into a lovely cocktail dress, or a small-sized suit is a dream come true for most women. But, making time for gym and eating salads, is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you want to get rid of the unwanted fats on different parts of the body, vaser liposuction may be the right solution for you.

Overview

Vaser liposuction, commonly known as LipoSelection or Vaser-assisted liposuction, is a minimally invasive procedure which uses ultrasound-guided technology with advanced surgical methods to break and remove fat deposits and fat tissues from the body.

‘VASER’ stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance.

Vaser liposuction can be performed in different areas such as the arm, thigh, neck, abdomen, hips, knees, love handles, chin, etc. This surgery shapes, contours and tones the entire body creating a more desirable and defined shape.

It is also popular among men with gynaecomastia.

ELIGIBILITY

Vaser liposuction is suitable for healthy individuals with high-fat deposition in their trunks, thigh, arm, etc. The individuals must have the appropriate body mass index (BMI) and live a healthy lifestyle. It is also suitable for those who desire to lose a few inches but have failed through traditional methods like exercise and diet.

The individual must also have firm and elastic skin. One should always have realistic expectations of what the procedure can do for them

Advantages of Vaser liposuction

Vaser liposuction is associated with the following benefits:

  • Less pain
  • Less hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery
  • No blood clots or formation or lumps under the skin
  • Minimal side effects
  • No further procedure is required

PREPARATION BEFORE PROCEDURE

Before the surgery, the patient will be informed about the benefits and risks of Vaser liposuction surgery. Understanding this would help the patient prepare for the procedure.

The following tips can help one prepare for Vaser liposuction:

  • Inform the surgeon if you are taking any medications, particularly those containing aspirin. They can affect the clotting capacity of the blood and increase bleeding during and after the procedure.
  • Quit smoking at least two weeks before and after the procedure.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol, and adding too much garlic in the food.
  • Carry loose clothes to wear after the procedure.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for six to eight hours before the procedure.
  • Remove makeup, jewelry and any accessories containing metal before the surgery.
  • If you have any allergies, injuries or infections, it is recommended to inform the surgeon before the procedure.

PROCEDURE TYPE

Traditional liposuction Vaser liposuction
Best option for weight loss  Best option for body contouring
In this procedure, a cannula is inserted under the deep skin layers to break the fat deposits This procedure involves the usage of ultrasonic waves to break the fat deposits.
More pain Less pain when compared with traditional liposuction
Works best for removing fat deposits from the breast, buttocks, abdomen, chin, and knees Works best for removing fat deposits from the neck, chin, arms, and thigh region
Greater risk of damage to the surrounding tissues No/minimal risk of damage to the surrounding tissues

ABOUT PROCEDURE

Initially, general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is administered. During the procedure, tumescent solution, a special saline solution is injected into the area to be treated. This helps numb the area and shrink the blood vessels to reduce blood loss and bruising. It also wets the site of treatment, causing the fat cells to liquefy easily during the Vaser liposuction. Small incisions are made on the surface of the skin. A small probe is employed to transmit high-frequency sound energy from the Vaser systems, which fragment the fat tissues.

The ultrasound sound energy is emitted either above (using a special emitter) or below (using an ultrasound cannula) the skin surface. It does not affect the surrounding tissues, leaving them intact.

The liquefied fat flows through the tumescent solution in the body, which can be easily extracted by massaging the site and through gentle suction.

POST-PROCEDURE CARE

After the surgery, the patient is required to remain in the hospital for two hours until the anesthesia wears off. The patient is also monitored to assess the progress. A family member should accompany the patient, as driving is not recommended for a minimum of 48 hours after the surgery.

The surgeon may advise the patient to wear a special garment to minimize swelling and bruising. The size of the garment will depend on the area of treatment. It is recommended to be worn throughout the day for a week. It is advisable not to take a shower during this one week.

After one week, the sutures and bandages are removed, and waterproof plasters are placed.

RECOVERY TIPS

A few tips which will help in faster healing and recovery include:

  • Begin a course of Endermologie (machine-assisted massages) in the hospital or clinic
  • Keep the area of surgery dry and clean
  • Wear loose clothes
  • Continue the prescribed antibiotics as advised by the surgeon
  • Contact the surgeon if the special garment is too tight or if it gets itchy
  • Reduce the consumption of salt and salty products
  • Drink plenty of water and be hydrated
  • Perform light exercises like walking
  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy weight lifting for at least 6-8 weeks
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet

FACTORS AFFECTING COST

The cost of the procedure depends upon:

  • The technology used
  • The expertise of the doctor
  • Extent of liposuction needed

FAQ

There are a few limitations to the amount of fat that can be liquefied and removed from the body in one procedure. It may be helpful to get an approximate idea by bending the waist down and analyzing the amount of fat which hangs from above or below the waist. This procedure does not cause weight loss; it only tones and shapes the body.

The visible results of the procedure greatly depend on the extensiveness of the procedure, the number of areas treated, the amount of fat removed, etc.

It is always helpful to incorporate a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and good routine exercise. As the fat tissues and deposits are permanently removed, they cannot return or move to other areas. If in case, there is weight gain, it will naturally distribute itself through the entire body and the remaining fat tissues will slowly expand.

A Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound technology to target only the fatty tissues while not affecting the other tissues. Whereas, a traditional liposuction procedure is an invasive method which is performed manually, and takes a longer time for the patient to recover. The conventional process typically involves a lot of side effects.

The complications of Vaser liposuction are quite rare; they include:

  • Accumulation of fluid under the skin treated
  • Blood clot formation
  • Paresthesias
  • Fat clot formation
