It serves as an integral adjoining route between regions of Tibet and Assam. Proudly labeled by the locals as the ‘Jewel of the East’, Trashigang is the largest dzongkhag of Bhutan. Due to its rich history as a trading hub, this region exhibits a cultural amalgamation which is rarely seen in Bhutan. The rich cultural heritage can be seen in the different attires worn by the people here as compared to the traditional Gho and Kira worn in the rest of the country.

One of the best places to visit in Trashigang is the 17th century magnificent Trashigang Dzong. Fringed by the rivers Drangme Chhu and Gamri Chhu and perched atop the stiff cliffs of eastern Himalayas, the Trashigang dzong is the oldest monument of the district. For those seeking the spiritual teachings of Buddha, Trashigang is a heavenly destination with its numerous monasteries and chortens. From the enchanting and serene Gom Kora, where the Guru Rinpoche meditated to subdue a demon to the Yonphu Lhakhang to the marvelous Rangjung Woesel Choeling Monastery to the Khardung Anim Dratshang to the Thekchok Choden Monastery and the Rangshikhar Goempa, Trashigang is indeed a spiritual abode.

A trip to Trashigang is incomplete without catching a glimpse of the culture and lifestyle of its inhabitants and nomadic tribes. Head to the enthralling Merak Valley adorned with exotic flora and fauna and experience the fascinating culture of the people living in these tranquil lands. A one and half hour drive from the Trashigang town takes to the breathtaking villages of Phongme and Radi. While the Phongme Village is a touristy hotspot for cultural aficionados and hosts the famous 9 masked dances of Phonge, the Radi village is the rice bowl of Trashigang and offers tourists the chance to taste the delicious flavor of the rice produced here. Another popular sightseeing spot is the nearby Khaling Village, which appeals to bird watchers with its more than 35 species of different colorful birds. Another way to mingle with the locals is by visiting the Giant Prayer Wheel, situated at the center of the Trashigang town.

A former center of trade with Tibet and boasting magnificent structures that reflect the culture and heritage of the eras gone by, Trashigang in Eastern Bhutan is one of the best places to visit for a laidback vacation.
