Also known as Gangtey Goenpa, the tourist spot is surrounded by a large village which is inhibited by families of the 140 Gomchems who takes care of the monastery. Taking a little step back in history, the Goenpa was established in 1613 by Pema Tinley, the grandson of great Bhutanese saint Terchen Pema Lingpa, the treasure revealer. Tourists visiting the Gangteng Monastery can still witness the religious tradition of Pema Lingpa being taught here.<\/p>\n<p>Coming to the architecture of the Gangteng Monastery, some of the areas in the complex reflects the Tibetan architectural style. The monastery comprises five temples surrounding the main central tower. The hall of the monastery has eight massive wooden pillars which are considered to be the largest in Bhutan. Woodwork that was done both inside and outside has now been replaced and the frescoes and paintings have been redone giving it a completely new and more alluring look.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, the other places around the tourist attraction offer a wonderful chance for the sightseeing tour. Heading to the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, there will be spotting scopes for catching the best view of the cranes, especially during the winter season. The other popular points of interest to explore in and around the Gangtey includes Kumbu Lhakhang, Gangtey Nature Trail, Tenkhor Yuetshe, Kilkorthang Trail,\u00a0Damchen Lhakhang and more.
