Druk Wangyal Lhakhang lies in close proximity to the Dochula Pass, a famous tourist attraction in Bhutan and home to other landmarks like Druk Wangyal Chortens and Rhododendron Gardens. In fact, the construction of this structure was preceded by the construction of Druk Wangyal Chorten. It was built to celebrate 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan. The outcome certainly matches the intended goal, for, it is a sight which impresses you easily.<\/p>\n
The entire structure is set against the backdrop of dense forests, which are themselves overlooked by enormous mountains. It has been built at a high altitude, so as to emphasize its importance and for what it stands. The construction of Druk Wangyal Lhakhang was completed in 2008 under the patronage of Queen Ashi Dorji Wangchuk. If its exterior is impressive, so is its interior.<\/p>\n
It is only when you enter the main building that you get to see the magnificent modern wall murals. However, the murals that are depicted here are different from the ones you would normally come across in the rest of Bhutan. Besides the depiction of traditional themes, they also display modern ones. Examples of these are images of a Druk air plane, a monk with a laptop, the royal family and the 4th King of Bhutan leading his army against the militants. A festival is now held to commemorate that heroic event, and is held every year in December.
