Another feather has been added to the India- Bengal cooperation in the Railway sector. After the Maitree Express, which has been running since 2008 between Dhaka, and Kolkata, Railway Ministry has come up with another train route between Kolkata and Khulna, which is likely to commence next year in January during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India visit. All the groundwork for the launch has already been done, including the meeting of senior officials from both sides.
The launch of the new train service comes under the umbrella of the joint declaration made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka in June last year. In fact, recently the frequency of Maitree Express was increased to four days a week between Kolkata and Dhaka, catering to the growing demand of passengers from both sides.
