A joint team of forest guards and Special Task Force has gunned down four poachers in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
The team got a tip-off that a group of six-seven people were entering the park area, following which they launched a massive operation in the Agratoli range of the park. A park official informed that the operation started in the evening.
The security forces came face-to-face with the poachers near the Duramoni Noloni camp and killed two poachers on the spot. However, the remaining members of the group managed to escape with the security forces in hot pursuit.
The security forces though managed to close in on the poachers and two of them were shot; their bodies though were only recovered the next morning.
The poachers who have been gunned down have been identified as Karpung Pegu, Jit Doley, Brown Mili and Yusuf Ali. A .303 rifle, two silences, 10 live cartridges, eight empty cartridges and some food materials have also been recovered from the poachers.
This year so far, nine rhinos have lost their lives, while security forces have managed to kill 20 poachers. In addition security forces and forest guards have also arrested 22 poachers/linkmen in the park and its adjoining areas.
