The Northeastern state of Nagaland have set a new record of housing the largest church in Asia. Built in Zunheboto town in the district of the same name, the Sumi Baptist Church is believed to be 1,864.9 meter in height and 23,73,476 sq ft in the plinth area and has a seating capacity of 8500 people with the facility of 27 rooms including the main hall. The church is set atop a hill, and its blue dome and white turrets can be seen from around 20 villages of Zunheboto District. This egg-shaped church is also the only Baptist church in the town.
The Church has been built in the budget of INR 36 Crore and is designed by a 38-year old native female architect, Honoholi K. Chishi-Zhimomi. It took 10 years and around 2000 people to construct the church, which is said to have begun on May 7, 2007, and it concluded on March 31 in 2017. The bell of the church itself weighs 500 kg and has been reportedly imported from Poland and has a sound outreach of 1.5 km.
