Ministry of Home Affairs in its 2016 report revealed that about 1.5 lakh tourists visited India for medical treatments. The report states that 1,76,683 people arrived in India in the year 2016 for medical treatments, whereas 1,34,344 tourists were recorded last year in 2015 and 76,608 in 2014.
If the news is to be believed, the newly launched e-medical visa is likely to boost medical tourism with allowing triple entry. An extension of six months (case-to-case basis) will be provided to the tourists seeking medical care in India. It is also worth noting that in emergency cases, the medical visa can be approved within 48 hours. Also, the Medical attendants will be issued an attendant visa and two attendants per patient will be allowed (excluding from Pakistan and Bangladesh). Provision of separate counters for the medical visa is also to be considered soon.
