Those planning a pilgrimage tour to Chardham in Uttarakhand will now have to undergo an alcohol test before the yatra. Uttarakhand Tourism Department has plans to make alcohol test mandatory for pilgrims visiting Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines. The decision came in as a measure to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimages and to avoid any indecorous behaviour during the yatra. It is being said that the decision has been made after a number of incidents reported against the pilgrims who were undertaking the yatra in an inebriated state. However, no such restriction will be imposed on pilgrims staying at the hotels.
This year the pilgrims will also be issued photo identity cards, which they have to carry throughout the course of the Chardham yatra in Uttarakhand that will start to from April 28, 2017.
