On 1stOctober these two reserved woods were amalgamated into a sole wildlife sanctuary. In the year 1955, the area of this protected expanse was enlarged to 391 sq.kms from its previous extent of 360 sq. km.

In 1990, the Panbari Reserve Forest, Kokilabari Reserve Forest and Kahitama Reserve Forest were added as a part of Manas National Park. In the same year this park was declared as the National Park. The name this park is taken from Manas River that streams through the western side of the national park. Expanding to the expanse of 950 sq. kms, this sanctuary acts as a core region of ChirangRipo Elephant Reserve.
