Varanasi or Banaras is one of the oldest
cities of India. This city
has found place in the Buddhist scriptures as well the
epic of Mahabharata.
In
Pali language Varanasi was called Banarasi
hence it got the name 'Banaras'. Varanasi is also called
'Kashi' or the city of spiritual light. Kashi is the
place where Shiva and Parvati stood when the "time
started ticking".
This
ancient city of India is located on holiest river of
India--Ganga. This relation is unique and has attracted
thousands of pilgrims. One theory also goes that Varanasi
is located on the land between the river Varuna and
Assi hence the name Varanasi.
This
town also has its place in history with many events
and incidents being related with it. From time immemorial
Varanasi has been the center of education, religion,
art and culture.
For every visitor Varanasi has different experiences
to offer. The shimmering red and golden water of the
Ganges when rays of dawn falls on them, the high banks,
the temples, the Ashrams, the pavilions all are an experience
in themselves.
Chanting
of Mantras, the hymns along with the fragrance of incense
in fills the air with mysticism which entrails every
person. The refreshing dip in the Ganges with the splashing
of water along the ghats-- in Varanasi discovery and
experience takes to the ultimate bliss.
Not
only for its temples, Ghats and Ganges Banaras has produced
many exponents of art, music, literature and crafts.
These people were not different from others but it was
the tradition of Banaras which moulded them in the way
they came out to be.
Why
only the luminaries, Varanasi has excelled in the art
of silk weaving. The Banarasi silk sarees and brocades
are cherished as collector's items across the world.

Varanasi
(Places To see)
Vishwanath Temple
The Vishwanath temple, or Golden Temple, is the most
sacred temple in Varanasi and is dedicated to Vishveswara-Shiva
as lord of the universe. The original temple was destroyed
by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, and the present temple
was built in 1776 by Rani Ahilyabai of Indore . 800kg
of gold plating on the towers, which gives the temple
its colloquial name, was provided by Maharaja Ranjit
Singh of Lahore some 50 years later.
Benaras
Hindu University
Varanasi has long been a centre of learning and that
tradition is continued today at the Benaras Hindu University
(BHU) built in 1917. It is considered to be the largest
residential university in Asia. It was founded by the
great nationalist Pandit Malaviya as a centre for education
in Indian art, music, culture and philosophy, and for
the study of Sanskrit. The five sq km campus houses
the Bharat Kala Bhavan which has a fine collection of
miniature paintings, sculptures from 1st to 15th centuries.
Tulsi Manas Temple
Only 150m south of Durga Temple is the modern marble
shikhara-style Tulsi Manas Temple, built in 1964. Its
two tier walls are engraved with verves and scenes from
the Ram Charit Manas, the Hindi version of the Ramayana.
Its author , poet Tulsi Das, lived here while writting
it.This Temple is on the spot where Saint Tulsidas composed
the Ramayana in Hindi (The Ramacharitamanas).
Durga
Temple
The Durga temple is one of the most important temples
in Varanasi and is built in the 18th century, by Bengali
maharani and is stained red with ochre . This temple
is built in north Indian Nagara style with a multi-tiered
shikhara (spire). The shikhara of the temple is formed
by many small spires which are built one on top of the
other. Durga is the 'terrible' form of Shiva's consort
Parvati, so at festivals there are often sacrifices
of goats. It is commonly known as Monkey Temple due
to many frisky monkey that have made it their home.
Ram Nagar Fort & Museum
On the opposite bank of river, this 17th century fort
is the home of the former maharaja of Benaras. It looks
most impressive from the river, though the decrepit
planking of the pantoon bridge you cross to reach it
is somewhat of a distraction. During the mansoon access
is by ferry. The intresting museum here contains old
silver & brocade palanquins for the ladies of the
court, gold-plated elephant howdahs, an astrological
clock, marcabre elephant traps and an armoury of swords
and old guns.
Bharat
Mata Temple
Dedicated to 'Mother India', this temple has a marble
relief map of India instead of usual images of gods
& goddesses. The map is said to be perfectly in
scale, both vertically and horizentally.the temple was
opened by Mahatma Gandhi.
SITES
NEARBY
A tourist to Varanasi must make it a point to visit
the Ramnagar Fort and Sarnath, both situated on the
outskirts of this city. The former, situated on the
opposite bank of the Ganges, is the residential palace
of the former Maharaja of Varanasi. The hall of public
audience (Durbar Hall) and the royal museum housing
collections of palanquins, elephant saddles, arms, furniture,
costumes, etc., are of great interest.
At
the other end of the city is Sarnath. Here in the fabled
deer park, where the Buddha preached his sermon enshrining
the principles of his teaching into laws. There is a
stupa and a large complex of ruined monasteries. Nearby
also stands the Ashoka Pillar commemorating the Mauryan
emperors visit to the place more than 2,000 years
back. The archeological museum located nearby holds
a rich collection of items belonging to the Kushan and
Gupta periods as well as from the Ashokan era.
One
may also undertake quite a few enjoyable excursions
from Varanasi. The fort of Chunar, about 37 km away,
is famous for its close association with the Afghan
ruler Sher Shah Suri. Kusumi Forest (8 km) and the Rajdari
and Deodari Falls in the Chandraprabha forest (70 km)
are beautiful picnic spots.
Fair And Festivals
The festive magic never ends in Varanasi. If Poornima
cleanses, Maha Shivratri blesses. If Holika-Dahan is
a celebration, Dhrupad Mela is a revelation
